The John N. Gardner Inspirational Faculty Award is given in honor of John N. Gardner, Distinguished Professor Emeritus. During his 32 year career at South Carolina, Gardner served as director of University 101 for 25 years and is the founder of the National Resource Center for the First-Year Experience and Students in Transition. Now in retirement from the University, Gardner serves as Senior Fellow of the Center. His continuing role as Senior Fellow involves him in the work of the Center’s publications and conferences, as well as other campus-wide projects. This award is in recognition of his many efforts during his career to enhance University of South Carolina living and learning communities.
Description of the Award:
Initiated in 1999, The John N. Gardner Inspirational Faculty Award is presented each academic year by University Housing and University 101 Programs to a faculty member who clearly demonstrates a devotion to the education of students living on-campus by encouraging them to intentionally select and participate in meaningful experiences within and beyond the classroom (e.g. community engagement, research, study abroad, leadership, internships, etc.) and then to “make sense” of those experiences through in-depth reflection.
1) Be a faculty member on the USC-Columbia campus
2) Actively participate in activities that enhance integrative living and learning experiences for students on-campus
Faculty, staff, administrators or students may nominate candidates. Letters of nomination should be addressed to Hilary Lichterman, Associate Director of Residential Learning Initiatives. The letter should reflect the nominee’s participation in activities enriching the campus learning experience for students. Additional documentation may be included, but is not required.

Presentation of the Award:
The recipient will be publicly recognized at the Faculty Awards Ceremony and the University Housing Awards Breakfast. The award winner and nominator will be informed prior to each event. We are pleased to announce that the recipient will receive a plaque and a $500 award.
