Improvements to Greene Street pedestrian safety begin Dec. 18

USCMP_ExecutiveSummary_Jan5_2011.inddStarting Dec. 18 the 1500 block of Greene Street will be closed to vehicle traffic as a project to improve pedestrian safety begins. Construction, which will center on the intersection of Greene and Bull Streets, is expected to be complete by August 2014.

The project will reduce vehicle traffic and enhance pedestrian routes in a heavily traveled area of campus. The Russell House University Union, Thomas Cooper Library, Thomson Student Health Center and several residence halls are in the vicinity.

Improvements will include closing more of Greene Street to through traffic during weekdays, creating bike lanes, widening sidewalks near Pickens Street, introducing a roundabout on Bull Street near the Russell House and adding illuminated pedestrian pathways to provide easier access into the Gibbes Green area of campus.

During construction, drivers and pedestrians are urged to observe new signage and restrictions.
