The University of South Carolina Men’s Rugby Team wrapped up their season by finishing nationally in the Elite Eight in USA Rugby DI-AA. South Carolina went undefeated in regular season play, earning the SCRC Eastern Division Title and advancing to the SCRC championship weekend, defeating both Auburn and Louisiana State for the Conference Championship title, all three achievements a first for the program.
Since concluding their season, the program has received both the Southeastern Rugby Coach and Player of the Year awards, now for the second year in a row. The team also received eight spots on the 15 man All-Conference Team, the most of any team in conference history.
Following graduation, the team now transitions its focus to the 7’s game as it will be competing at the end of this month in the USA 7’s Collegiate Rugby Championship at PPL Park in beautiful Philadelphia, PA. The CRC is the highest profile college rugby competition in the United States, with the tournament broadcast live on NBC every year. The CRC has capitalized on the surge in popularity of rugby following the 2009 announcement of the addition of rugby to the Summer Olympics beginning in 2016.
With limited financial support from the University, the players and coaching staff have challenged their boosters and alumni to assist them in raising the necessary funding to attend, as well as work to sell tickets to the event for a strong Carolina presence. With less than three weeks until the event, the team has made considerable headway, though they are now seeking additional help from the Gamecock community to make their championship run possible.
