Biology Intensive Orientation for students at the University of South Carolina is designed to increase success of incoming freshmen biology and other science majors and to give them a jump start in their introductory biology courses.
Students must be enrolled in BIOL 101 for the 2014 fall semester. BIOS consists of a voluntary, non-credit, five day program the week before fall classes begin, with early check-in for university residence halls in the students’ regular fall room assignments, plus all meals during the program. The program will be held August 13 – 17, 2014.
The BIOS Program consists of academic activities including biology lectures, mathematics in biology lectures, recitation sessions, real introductory biology exams, learning styles and advanced learning strategies discussions, group work and study group formation, biology faculty research lectures and laboratory tours, academic advising and tours of academic buildings and offices.
Total cost for the program is a $450 Program Fee plus a $60 Residence Hall Early Check-In Fee. Partial waiver of the program fee, covering $350 of the $450 program fee is available for Pell-eligible students. The BIOS Program includes the Campbell Biology textbook and an iClicker2 for BIOL 101/102, and all meals during the program. The 2014 BIOS Pilot Program will be limited to 100 students on a first-come, first-served basis.
