Executive Director of Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society for First Year Students Dr. Glenda Earwood announced that the University of South Carolina chapter has won the prestigious Order of the Torch Award for their service during the 2013-2014 academic year.
This year the National Council recognized six chapters from the 275 chapters across the nation. The Torch Award recipients are selected on the basis of outstanding chapter work in programming, internal communications, campus visibility and overall presentation of their application.
The chapter was led by Hanna Westfall, a political science and English major from Gergetown, S.C., and Karra McCray, a business and management/marketing major from Washington, D.C., who served as officers of the University of South Carolina chapter last year. The chapter is advised by Vincent Buonocore.
This award-winning chapter at the University of South Carolina participated in and organized many events throughout the academic year, including their annual USC Challenge for area high schools, assisting with Move-In Week, participating in the Columbia Downtown Triathlon, organizing a clothing drive for the local Salvation Army, hosting leadership talks and events on campus and taking part in the local Relay for Life.
Alpha Lambda Delta emphasizes that educated persons have a responsibility to “have tolerance in [their] dealings with all persons, generosity in giving to those in need, and insight into the feelings of others,” Dr. Earwood said. Members are encouraged to make a “meaningful contribution to society.”
Founded in the spring of 1924 at the University of Illinois by Dean Maria Leonard, Alpha Lambda Delta is a national honor society that recognizes academic excellence among first year students. Alpha Lambda Delta has 275 active chapters throughout the United States and more than 1 million students have been initiated into membership since the first chapter was started 90 years ago.
Since 1988, over 13,000 students have earned membership in the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society at USC, with 729 members initiated in 2014 alone. The USC chapter of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society invites freshman with a 3.5 GPA or higher to join in January based on fall semester grades.
