Joseph C. Derrick, who has served since 2013 as Senior Associate Director, has been named Director of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships at the University of South Carolina. Derrick will assume his new role on January 1, succeeding Dr. Ed Miller, who is retiring after serving as director since 1999.
As Director of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships, Derrick will oversee the office which serves more than 32,000 undergraduate and graduate aid recipients on the Columbia campus, disbursing approximately $400 million in need-based and merit funding to worthy students each year. Derrick will also be responsible for participating in enrollment management administration by setting goals and establishing policies and procedures that facilitate enrollment of new students and the retention of continuing students.
“It is my pleasure to announce Joey Derrick as our new Director of Financial Aid. Joey has a strong track record as a collaborator and student advocate, and is widely admired and respected across campus for his contributions, experience and dedication to the university. I couldn’t be more pleased to have him join the Enrollment Management leadership team, ” said Scott Verzyl, associate vice president for enrollment management. “I know Joey will continue to bring new ideas, expertise, energy and leadership to the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships, and build on the successful programs and services he helped develop in his prior role.”
Prior to his position as Senior Associate Director, Derrick held several roles within the office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships during his 13 years with the university, including Associate Director, Senior Assistant Director of Information Resources, Information Specialist, and Financial Aid Counselor. Derrick has been a key member of the leadership team responsible for implementing the OneCarolina Student Information System. Derrick earned both his bachelor’s degree in business administration and his master of business administration from USC and holds affiliations with several national student financial aid associations.
“I am honored to serve the University of South Carolina as the next Director of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships. I have been fortunate to serve under financial aid leaders such as Dr. Ed Miller and Bob Godfrey, and work with a dedicated and talented staff. Together, we will continue a tradition of excellence as we move forward.”
