Staff Notes

Jennifer Myers has joined the Healthy Carolina Initiative and is now working with and reporting to Jessica Johnston. Jennifer has been doing great work leading mental health initiatives on campus while reporting through the Counseling Center. She will be assisting in research, benchmarking and environmental approaches to improve the mental health of USC and will continue her strong collaboration with Counseling and Psychiatry. Her title will remain as the Assistant Director for Mental Health Initiatives and her office is located in the Strom Thurmond Wellness and Fitness Center.

Dr. Sterling Watson has been promoted to the Assistant Director of Training for the Counseling and Psychiatry department. He will oversee the pre-doctoral internship, which, among many tasks, includes organizing and managing the search for new pre-doctoral interns each year and providing direct guidance and leadership to each cohort of interns who come to UofSC. He will also collaborate with Barbara Sheridan, Khris Coolidge and Toby Lovell who coordinate the EdS training program, the MSW training program and the post-doc training program, respectively.

Dr. Ray Hodges has been promoted to the Coordinator of Psychiatry for Counseling & Psychiatry. He will be working closely with Karin Tonkin on further integration and collaboration within the units and to advance the mental health of our campus community and our patient-centered medical home. Ray has served as a staff psychiatrist for more than a year and has done an excellent job both clinically and providing leadership and direction to the psychiatry department.

Dean Smedley joined the Russell House team in January as associate director for Russell House operations. He brings almost 12 years of experience in higher education and most recently served as assistant director for student center operations for the Jaguar Student Activities Center at Georgia Regents University. At the Russell House, Dean is responsible for overall facility management, building and event staffing, event reservations and services, custodial and housekeeping services, technical operations, information center and game room, and general building security for the university union facilities including the Russell House, Gressette Room, Rutledge Chapel and several outdoor program spaces. Connor Morvay is the new operations and events coordinator in the Russell House. He worked as a Russell House building manager as a USC student and served in a temporary role in Russell House operations for the last few months after he graduated. Reach Connor at or 777-3901.

Ashley Oswald is the new operations and events coordinator in the Russell House. She worked as a life guard and events coordinator for Campus Recreation as a USC student and served in a temporary role in Russell House operations since early February. Reach Ashley at or 777-3901.

Joe Johnson, who previously served as event services coordinator for the Russell House, has moved into a new position. As program advisor for Carolina Productions and Carolina After Dark, Joe advises and manages the campus-wide programming initiatives sponsored by Carolina Productions, the student-run programming board, and coordinates the university’s late-night programming, called Carolina After Dark. Mike Hyde is now the associate director for Campus Recreation facilities. He previously served as assistant director. Mike has been with the university for 11 years starting out as a facility coordinator. He is responsible for directing the maintenance, custodial and grounds operations for all Campus Recreation facilities. Mike can be reached at or 576-9374.

Brittoni Reynolds is now the assistant director for Campus Recreation facilities. She took on her new role in December 2014 after having served as a facility coordinator since 2005. In her role as assistant director for facilities, she is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Strom Thurmond Wellness and Fitness Center and Blatt P.E. Center and maintaining the Campus Recreation master schedule. Brittoni can be reached at

Karina Liles has been awarded a GEM National Consortium Fellowship. Liles was selected by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, where she will complete the internship component of the fellowship. The GEM program seeks to enhance the value of the nation’s human capital by increasing the participation of underrepresented groups at the master’s and doctoral levels in engineering and science.  The fellowship provides Ms. Liles a stipend, tuition assistance, and a paid summer internship in 2015.  More than 4,000 GEM Fellowships have been awarded since the program’s inception 39 years ago.
