IdeaPOP!, the division’s annual in-house conference held at the Russell House, is Wednesday (May 18). In our last sneak peek before the event, we’re highlighting the keynote and lunch speakers, Frances Lucas and Chakisse Newton, respectively.

frances_lucasKEYNOTE – Motivation: A Foundation for Success
In her opening session, Frances Lucas will share seven things she has learned that have kept her motivated in her career both as a college president and student affairs administrator. She will invite you to consider what keeps you motivated and will provide ideas for staying energetic, focused, engaged and resilient in your work. In her follow-up session, Lucas will offer a more interactive and introspective workshop about what behaviors keep us happy.

Lucas has served in higher education leadership positions for 34 years at six institutions, and has served either as a vice president or president for 28 of those years. During her career, she has been the first female vice president at two institutions — Baldwin Wallace College and Emory University — and, as president of Millsaps College, she became the first female college president in the state of Mississippi.

LUNCH SESSION – Networking for Success
Everyone knows that networking is an important part of professional success, but few people actually feel good at it. Networking is about more than collecting business cards and attending happy hours. It’s less about schmoozing and more about relationship   building. But how can you build a networking strategy that works for both you and your career? In this interactive session, Chakisse Newton, founder and president of Cardinal Consulting, will help both the reluctant and experienced professional achieve better results in professional and personal settings. Learn how to position yourself and your work for success, to promote yourself without feeling pushy, and to develop meaningful professional relationships. The session will include hands-on practice creating a networking  strategy and practicing specific networking techniques.
